Florida toddler dies in hot car ‘after dad forgets to drop him off at daycare’

A Florida toddler died after spending the whole day inside a hot car after his dad allegedly forgot to drop him off at day care.
The youngster’s lifeless body was found at around 4.20pm on November 1 after the father went to collect him from Bayfront Child Development Center in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Staff informed him that the one-year-old son had not attended that day – and he was later found to still be in the car, police say.
“The father had the child in the morning and – it was not part of their routine – took the child to an appointment with him,” SPPD spokesperson Yolanda Fernandez told Fox 13.
“The father went in to try to pick the child up, but the daycare said, ‘you never dropped him off.’ So at that point, then the father kind of realized what was going on and went back out to the car,” Fernandez said.
The child was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.
No charges have been filed and an autopsy is expected to take place.
The Tampa Bay area had a record-high temperature of 91 degrees with a heat index of 101 degrees, weather reports show.
DON’T MISS:
“In just 10 minutes, it can become 20 degrees hotter inside a vehicle with the doors closed and that is not an environment that is sustainable for life for a child, or an adult,” St. Petersburg Fire Rescue Division Chief Lindsay Judah warned.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, about 37 children die annually from heatstroke, either from being left or getting trapped in a car.
Florida holds the second rank for the highest number of car deaths in the nation. Last year, there were six hot car deaths in Florida, as per Kids and Care Safety.
